What actually
drove the shift.

The three-point line existed from the 1979-80 season — the same year the NBA debuted it — but for fifteen years it was essentially decorative. Teams shot two or three a night, usually late in games to chase deficits. The league's best players built their games in the mid-range and at the rim, and the analytics infrastructure to challenge that simply didn't exist yet.

The mid-2000s dead-ball era was the breaking point. Hand-check rules loosened slightly, isolation basketball peaked, and defensive schemes — particularly the zone-heavy, physical defenses of teams like Detroit, San Antonio, and Chicago — ground scoring to a halt. The 1999 lockout year hit 91.6 points, but even after the league recovered, scoring limped along in the 95–100 range for years.

Then Daryl Morey built the Houston Rockets around expected value. The corner three and the layup became the only shots worth taking. Other front offices noticed. By the time Stephen Curry turned the Golden State Warriors into a machine built entirely on pace, spacing, and volume three-point shooting, the game's center of gravity had already shifted. The visual the charts make is almost unfair — 2 attempts in 1980, 36 by 2026. That's not an evolution. That's a different sport.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about the 2005-06 NBA season: it was the hardest possible environment to score in that the modern game had produced. League-wide scoring had cratered to 95.6 points per team per game — lower than any season since the early 1980s. Defenses were physical, defensive schemes were sophisticated, and the three-point line was still largely treated as a last resort rather than a weapon. In that environment, Kobe Bryant averaged 35.4 points per game for an entire 82-game season.

Look beyond the raw number and the efficiency picture becomes even more remarkable. The free throw data shows 2005-06 sitting right at the peak of the isolation era — teams were generating 22–23 free throw points per game, the highest in modern history, because the game rewarded attacking the paint and drawing contact. Kobe leaned into that as hard as anyone: 8.6 free throw attempts per game, converting at 85%, meaning roughly 7.3 of his 35.4 points — about 21% — came from the stripe. He didn't just outscore everyone. He built his scoring across every channel the era made available. His TS% of 55.9% that season came in above the league average, which is extraordinary for someone carrying that volume.

And he didn't win MVP. Steve Nash won it for the second consecutive year — deserved, by most traditional metrics, with the Phoenix Suns' offense humming. But the framing of that vote has never sat right. Nash was the engine of the most efficient offense in basketball. Kobe was personally carrying a middling Lakers team on his back through the coldest scoring environment in a generation. Two different kinds of value. One MVP award. History has been quietly relitigating that call ever since.

logy

Team scoring averages represent per-team, per-game figures for each NBA regular season from 1979-80 through 2025-26, sourced from Basketball Reference league averages. Three-point attempts represent per-game league averages for the same period.

Playoff figures follow the same methodology — per-team, per-game averages across all postseason games in each season. Playoff samples are naturally smaller than regular season and can show more year-to-year variance, particularly in shorter playoff fields.

Field goal percentage represents raw league-average FG% per team per game. True shooting percentage is calculated as Pts ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)), accounting for the added value of three-pointers and free throw attempts. Free throw points are derived from FTA × FT% league averages and expressed as a percentage of total team scoring per game.

Era classifications (Run & Gun, Dead Ball, Pace & Space) are editorial groupings based on observable inflection points in the data, not formally defined league categories.
